Our Legacy

One of America's most highly regarded classical music stations, KING FM, has been delivering great classical music to the Pacific Northwest since its founding by broadcasting pioneer Dorothy Stimson Bullitt in 1948.

Now reaching 250,000 listeners per week, KING FM has always bee at the forefront of technology, programming, and community service in classical music.

Historical Highlights

1948 - Dorothy Stimson Bullitt founded Classical KING FM.

1982 - KING FM was the first station to bring the quality of compact discs
             to radio listeners in the Northwest. First piece played from a 
             CD: Chopin: Fantaisie-   Impromptu with Bella Davidovich.

1994 - KING FM owners Priscilla Bullitt Collins and Harriet Stimson Bullitt 
            donated Classical KING FM to Beethoven, a community non-profit
            benefitting the Seattle Symphony, Seattle Opera, and ArtsFund, to
            ensure that classical music radio was forever part of the
            Seattle region.

1995 - KING FM was the first radio station in the world to broadcast a live 
            classical music concert, the Cyberian Rhapsody featuring the 
            Seattle Symphony.

1995 - KING FM became one of the first stations to broadcast full time on
             the internet. Today KING FM's four internet channels attract
             thousands of listeners from around the world.

2011 - KING FM's becomes a listener-supported, community radio station.

In 1995 in a philanthropic act hailed nationally for its innovation, Priscilla Bullitt Collins and Harriet Stimson Bullitt made a gift of Classical KING FM 98.1 to Beethoven, a non-profit corporation formed to realize the sister's charitable purposes for the station
