Included on the program will be the performance of six movements from Karl Jenkins The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace. Jenkins’ mass begins with a medieval tune that pervaded pubs and churches: “Each man will arm himself with a coat of armor. He will be feared.” From there Jenkins takes us on a journey, and, in the end, he turns to a major mode, and we sing in a place where we’d like to be: “Better is peace than always war…Ring in the thousand years of peace.”
We will be joined on Saturday evening by the McClure Middle School Choir and on Sunday afternoon by the Ballard High School Women’s Chamber Choir in Paul Caldwell and Sean Ivory’s moving and uplifting Hope for Resolution. This powerful piece juxtaposes two musical thoughts: a European chant melody and an anti-apartheid song…two pieces existing together, never fully meshing, but finding a harmonic space to fully exist side by side. The program will conclude with a selection of familiar secular and sacred songs of the season.
