Seattle Symphony principal cellist Efe Baltacigil makes his Symphony Tacoma debut in Elgar’s contemplative and elegiac Cello Concert. Marie Samuelsson’s music is sparse and lush at the same time- and deeply spiritual. Conductor Sarah Ioannides conducted the 2016 World Premier of The Eros Effect and Solidarity in Sweden; now she presents the US Premier. The program concludes with Sibelius’ beautiful Symphony No. 2 of 1902, hailed by many as a clarion call to Finland’s independence, but called a “confession of the soul” by the composer himself.
