St. James Cathedral Resident Ensemble Opus 7 presents an inventive and powerful concert of choral music for the Lenten season—including Benjamin Britten’s great masterpiece Cantata Misericordium, for choir, soloists, harp, percussion, piano, and string orchestra, featuring Eric Neuville, tenor, and Charles Robert Stephens, baritone. This dramatic retelling of the parable of the Good Samaritan compels us to show mercy to our neighbor. Also featured are multiple settings of the “O vos omnes” text (“All you who pass this way, behold and see my sorrow”) by John Muehleisen, Pablo Casals and Joakim Unander; alternating with inspiring works by Brahms, Rheinberger, Parry, Barber, and Elgar. Loren Pontén conducts this annual concert for the penitential season of Lent.
