Samuel Barber: Violin Concerto, Op.14: III. Presto in moto perpetuo
Samuel Barber in 1941 received a hefty commission to compose a violin concerto. He got right to work, composing two lush, gorgeous movements quickly. Things seemed to be going well until the commissioner saw the music and proclaimed it “too easy.” In response, Barber composed a fiendishly difficult third movement to balance out the work…only to get the complete opposite complaint, and a refund request, from his benefactor! Unfortunately for the guy with the purse strings, Barber had already put half the money toward a luxury vacation.
